Keystone Lime Company, Inc. of Springs, Pennsylvania had been in the business of quarrying and mining since 1929. We have 80 years of stone mining experience and 50 years of asphalt paving experience. Contact us to learn more about our stone quarries and mines.

Getting Started

Our family-owned quarrying company was started by grandfather Cleman E. Folk, who mined coal and limestone along with 2 employees in a small mine near Niverton (now Springs), Pennsylvania, using the coal to burn the lime prior to using it for agricultural purposes.

Switching Mines

In the 1940s, Mr. Folk moved his operation to a different limestone mine between Salisbury and Pocahontas, bought more trucks, and hired more employees. By the 1950s, he had leased a farm near High Point Lake in Savage, Pennsylvania, and began operating an open pit limestone quarry. Stone was crushed on-site to produce aggregates for road stone and other building purposes, as well as agricultural lime.

Expanding Our Company

The company was also able to lease an underground mine within a mile of that site, operated during the winter months only in order to maintain production year-round. In the 1950s, Cleman's son, Mark Folk, joined the company, focusing his attention on getting the aggregates state-approved and adding bituminous concrete, or blacktop, to the product line. Before Cleman died, a sandstone quarry near Grantsville, Maryland, was opened to again expand the operation.

Beyond Lime

Lime is no longer the chief concern of Keystone Lime Co., Inc. The quarries referenced above have been "worked out" and have been reclaimed. Additional quarries in PA, MD, and WV have been acquired to expand our service area. In addition, we now operate 2 hot mix asphalt plants, one in PA and one in MD..

The Son Takes Over

In 1974, Mark Folk assumed his father's position as President of the company. He still plays an active role in the day-to-day operations of the business. Mark's 3 daughters have since assumed the corporate officers' positions and are also involved in the business in combination management and accounting positions. The quarries and crushing plants are constantly being updated as we look for ways to improve production.
